Study Finds Most Office Workers Fear Backlash Of Telecommuting

8.15.08 | Grand Rapids, MI | The Steelcase Workplace Index Survey reports that most office workers fear a backlash for telecommuting, yet see the trend as increasing. The results, reported by Prime Newswire, www.primenewswire.com/, found that office workers fear that telecommuting can hurt their career prospects due to a lack of contact with the employer and the company's preference to control the work environment and prevent a decline in productivity. However, a majority of the respondents believe that current technology allows them to be just as connected to the office and that a different environment can actually make them more productive.

NY Times Looks At Complaints In The Workplace For Those Over 50

8.8.08  | New York, NY | New York Times columnist, Eilene Zimmerman explored a few of the complaints expressed by the "over 50" working community, such as increased difficulty in reading e-mails, recalling names and facts, hearing others in a crowded restaurant or on the phone. While all of the complaints are part of the aging process, several suggestions were offered for specific issues at work.
  • Vision: Eye specialists can prescribe special lenses for computer work. Increased font size and changing background colors for sharpened contrasts will aid in reading e-mails.
  • Hearing: Eat in for conferences rather than going to a noisy restaurant.  Use amplified phones and ear cushions.
  • Recall: Try different things such as using your non-dominant hand and exercise.
  • Aches and Pains at the computer: Use a wireless headset, an ergonomic keyboard and chair.
It also was reported that there IS a need for the older workforce who usually make more reasoned decisions and are less liked to panic.
