7.13.06 | Grand Rapids, MI | Levi Cohen, the owner of Brooklyn-based Luxurychair.com, is being sued by Herman Miller and Steelcase, according to a recent article by Barton Deiters (“Furniture giants take on dealer”) in The Grand Rapids Press. Mr. Cohen has been selling the manufacturers’ products at a discount, claiming that he purchases them from dealers “who have excess inventory or who get chairs returned due to incorrect orders,” notes Mr. Deiters. The reporter explains, however, “Steelcase and Herman Miller allege in their separate lawsuits that [Mr.] Cohen has infringed on trademarks and patents by using [the names of their products, including the Leap and Aeron chairs] and claiming to be an authorized dealer when he is not. They also allege false advertising.” Both manufacturers are seeking fines and damages and trying to prevent Mr. Cohen from selling their products and using their patents and trademarks. Mr. Cohen, meanwhile, has filed a countersuit against Herman Miller and refuses to change his business practices.

The CIWMB website praises Virco’s new Take-Back Program, its ZUMAfrd(tm) furniture, and the effective recycling program at its 560,000-sq.-ft. headquarters in Torrance, CA. Virco facilities manager Jason Morris said in a statement, “Since last year, we've partnered with local recycling and disposal companies in the LA area and have increased our overall recycling output. All of our scrap wood and sawdust now goes to an agricultural center to be used as filler in mulch products. We also initiated a miscellaneous plastic recycling program. As a result of these improvements, we have seen a 40 to 50% reduction in the amount of trash that's sent to landfills.”
