The NEP award was developed to recognize organizations and their community partners that have developed outstanding, ongoing community outreach programs to improve the environment in their neighborhood. Herman Miller's community partners include the West Michigan Environmental Action Council, West Michigan Sustainable Business Forum, Habitat for Humanity, and several schools in the Grand Rapids, Holland and Muskegon area.

8.06.09 | Washington, DC | The Architecture Billings Index plunged nearly five points in June. The June ABI rating was 37.7, far lower than the 42.9 the previous month. This score indicates a sharp decline in demand for design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The new projects inquiry score was 53.8, the fourth straight month with a score in the mid-50's.

8.6.09 | Washington, DC | ASID, the U.S. Green Building Council, and the Network of Executive Women in Hospitality are sponsoring a new sustainable suite design competition. Professionals will be given a chance to design a sustainable hotel suite that will be built on the show foor of Hospitality Design Expo, May 19-21, 2010 in Las Vegas. The competition was created to recognize forward thinking, earth conscious design ideas that will help drive green practices within the hotel industry. A Student and Young Professional Award also will be presented to an emerging professional. Both awards will be featured in Hospitality Design magazine, AISD ICON and the NEWH magazine. Submissions are due Aug. 31, 2009.

7.30.09 | Auckland, New Zealand | Accor announced plans to build a Novotel hotel at Auckland International Airport in New Zealand. Designed by locally based Warren & Mahoney Architects, the hotel is expected to be finished in time for Rugby World Cup 2011.

7.31.09 | Grand Rapids, MI | Steelcase Inc. won Industrial Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) for three of its products. Silver IDEAs were awarded to cobi and i2i, and a Bronze was awarded to Amia. Cobi and i2i are part of a recently-introduced category of collaborative seating that combines aesthetics with performance to facilitate collaboration and innovation. Amia is an ergonomic task chair which flexes with every move to offer consistent ergonomic support for the lower back.
