The new headquarters is seeking LEED Platinum for its sustainable features, most notably its use of wells and ground source heat pumps as a source of heating and cooling, coupled with an ice storage system for using off-peak power to create ice for day time cooling.

2009 Open Architecture Challenge Finalists Announced

7.23.09 | San Francisco, CA | Architecture for Humanity announced the eight team finalists in the 2009 Open Architecture Challenge: Classroom. The Open Architecture Challenge is an international design competition hosted once every two years on the Open Architecture Network. Each submission was assessed on feasibility, sustainability, innovation in learning and overall design quality. In September one of the teams will be awarded $5,000 and the selected partner school will receive up to $50,000 to realize their design. The finalists are:

LIGHTFAIR International Beats All Records

7.23.09 | Atlanta, GA| LIGHTFAIR International ended its 20th annual event with record-breaking registrations of 23,416 industry professionals and conference participants. The May 2009 event increased attendance by 8.5% and exhibit booths by 6% from LFI 2007 in New York. The exhibit hall sold out with 476 national and international manufacturers showcasing the latest product designs. LFI featured three product-specific Pavilions and more than 220 hours of courses and seminars were presented. To-date, the 2010 trade show floor, May 12-14, at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas, NV, is 82% sold out.

AQS Develops Environmental Chamber Protocol

7.23.09 | Marietta, GA | AQS developed an Environmental Chamber Protocol for measuring sulfur compounds from drywall. Since December 2008, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has received more than 600 reports from residents in 21 states and the District of Columbia who believe their health symptoms or corrosion of certain metal components in their homes are related to drywall produced in China. To assist manufacturers, users and public health agencies, Air Quality Sciences developed the protocol for evaluating odor perceptions and chemical emissions from drywall and other porous materials such as ceiling tile.
