Fourth Annual Ed Bacon Student Design Competition

"Brown to Green" challenges students to create a new vision for South Philadelphia's Grays Ferry Crescent, an area offering strong potential, but great challenges. Two Join J+J/Invision Chicago Team

7.8.09 | Dalton, GA | Arielle Heneghan and Ashley Sciore joined J+J/Invision, Chicago as Design Consultants. Dana Guler, current J+J/Invision Chicago Sales Representative, will lead the Chicago team. Ms. Sciore, an  interior design graduate, comes to J+J/Invision from Patcraft, where she was a territory manager. Ms. Sciore will be responsible for servicing architecture and design businesses outside of the metro Chicago area.  Ms. Heneghan, who previously worked at Bentley Prince Street, will service the downtown Chicago A & D community.

ESD Completes Allstate Data Center

7.8.09 | Chicago, IL | Environmental Systems Design completed the LEED Gold “Greenfield” data center for Allstate in Northwestern Illinois. The project  was named Green Data Center of the Year as part of the Data Center Executive of the Year National Awards competition. ESD designed the mechanical/electrical/plumbing systems for the project and acted as the sustainability consultant.

HOK Tops Annual Ranking Of Green Design Firms

7.8.09 | St. Louis, MO | HOK was ranked for the second consecutive year the greenest design firm on the planet in Engineering News-Record magazine. The survey is based on revenue for design services generated in 2008 from projects actively seeking certification from major third-party environmental standards or ratings organizations. HOK generated $197.54 million, or 26% of total revenue, from sustainable projects in 2008.

WAC Lighting President Shelley Wang Nominated For Residential Lighting Industry Leadership Award

Ms. Wang is the author of the company's Responsible Lighting campaign and helped co-organize the American Lighting Association's Youth Initiative. 2009 "Best Tall Buildings" Awards Announced

7.7.09 | Chicago, IL | The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat announced the winners of its annual "Best Tall Building" awards for 2009. The awards recognize one tall building from four geographical regions:  Americas, Asia & Australia, Europe, and Middle East & Africa.  This year's winners are:          

  • Manitoba Hydro Place, Winnipeg, Canada         
  • Linked Hybrid, Beijing, China         
  • The Broadgate Tower, London, United Kingdom         
  • Tornado Tower, Doha, Qatar
One of these four will be named "Best Tall Building Overall" at CTBUH's October awards dinner. The CTBUH also announced the winners of its two "Lifetime Achievement" Awards. This year's recipient of the Lynn S. Beedle Award will be John C. Portman, Jr. The recipient of the Fazlur Rahman Khan Medal  will be Dr. Prabodh V. Banavalkar

Mauna Kea Beach Hotel's Design Work Takes Top Prize

7.7.09 | Honolulu, HI |  The Mauna kea Beach Hotel receved the People's Choice Award from the AIA Honolulu Chapter.  Damaged in an earthquake, the winning project renovation was designed by John Hara, principal of John Hara Associates Inc. The chapter also presented two awards of excellence to John Ida of Urban Works, Inc. for the Honolulu Zoo Learning center, and to architect Gregory Warner, Walker Warner Architects for the Kamuela-area residence.

NYSID Student Wins $30,000 Scholarship From Donghia Foundation

7.7.09 | New York, NY | Daniel J. Park won the 2009 Angelo Donghia Foundation Senior Scholarship Award. A senior BFA student at the New York School of Interior Design, Mr. Park will receive a $30,000 scholarship to help cover the cost of tuition, room and board, books and other materials. His winning project was a design for an outpatient health-care facility for those coping with incurable diseases.

Humanscale Faces In The Wild: Call for Entries

Bernard Zimmerman Dies

7.7.09 | Los Angeles, CA | Bernard Zimmerman, a founder of the architecture department at California State Polytechnic University, died June 4. In 2001, he co-founded the Los Angles Institute of architecture and Design and helped to launch the Architecture + Design Museum. Mr. Zimmerman received a Lifetime Achievement Award for the Los Angeles chapter of the AIA in 1999.

Marriott, Starwood Hotels To Install Telepresence Tech

7.6.09 | Washington, DC, White Plains, NY | Marriott International and Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide announced plans to introduce Cisco's TelePresence remote conferencing technology to several properties this year. Marriott is partnering with AT&T to bring the Cisco TelePresence technology to Marriott, JW Marriott, and Renaissance properties in 25 cities. The company said the first meeting suites would be operational by the end of October. Starwood is working with Singapore-based Tata Communications to bring Cisco TelePresence rooms to 10 of its hotels by the end of the year. The first rooms will be in Sheraton properties and Westin properties. Telepresence technology allows small groups,  to use high-definition video and real-time audio to meet while in multiple locations worldwide.
