7.7.09 | Chicago, IL | The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat
announced the winners of its annual "Best Tall Building"
awards for 2009. The awards recognize one tall building from four geographical regions: Americas, Asia & Australia, Europe, and
Middle East & Africa. This year's winners are:
- Manitoba Hydro Place, Winnipeg, Canada
- Linked Hybrid, Beijing, China
- The Broadgate Tower, London, United Kingdom
- Tornado Tower, Doha, Qatar
One of these four will be named "Best Tall Building Overall" at CTBUH's October awards dinner. The CTBUH also announced the winners of its two
"Lifetime Achievement" Awards. This year's recipient of the
Lynn S. Beedle Award will be
John C. Portman, Jr.
The
recipient of the
Fazlur Rahman Khan Medal will be
Dr. Prabodh V. Banavalkar.

7.7.09 | Honolulu, HI | The Mauna kea Beach Hotel receved the People's Choice Award from the AIA Honolulu Chapter. Damaged in an earthquake, the winning project renovation was designed by John Hara, principal of John Hara Associates Inc. The chapter also presented two awards of excellence to John Ida of Urban Works, Inc. for the Honolulu Zoo Learning center, and to architect Gregory Warner, Walker Warner Architects for the Kamuela-area residence.

7.7.09 | New York, NY | Daniel J. Park won the 2009 Angelo Donghia Foundation Senior Scholarship Award. A senior BFA student at the New York School of Interior Design, Mr. Park will receive a $30,000 scholarship to help cover the cost of tuition, room and
board, books and other materials.
His winning
project was a design for an outpatient health-care facility for those coping
with incurable diseases.

artwork in any tangible medium depicting the face of a non-domesticated
animal is eligible for entry. All artwork will be judged and auctioned

75.

7.7.09 | Los Angeles, CA | Bernard Zimmerman, a founder of the architecture department at California
State Polytechnic University, died June 4. In 2001, he co-founded the Los Angles Institute of architecture and Design and helped to launch the Architecture + Design Museum. Mr. Zimmerman received a Lifetime Achievement Award for the Los Angeles chapter of the AIA in 1999.

7.6.09 | Washington, DC, White Plains, NY | Marriott International and Starwood Hotels &
Resorts Worldwide announced plans to introduce Cisco's TelePresence remote conferencing technology to several properties this
year.
Marriott is partnering with AT&T to bring the Cisco TelePresence
technology to Marriott, JW Marriott, and Renaissance properties in 25
cities. The company said the first meeting suites
would be operational by the end of October.
Starwood is working with Singapore-based Tata Communications
to bring Cisco TelePresence rooms to 10 of its hotels by the end of the
year. The first rooms will be in Sheraton properties and Westin properties. Telepresence technology allows small groups,
to use high-definition video and real-time audio to meet while in
multiple locations worldwide.

7.3.09 | Washington, DC | Leo A Daly's Washington office was selected by the government of the Republic of Chad to
provide architectural, engineering and landscape design for its new
embassy. The goal of
the project is to modernize the interior, exterior and landscape of the
building, built in the 1960s, which comprises approximately 8,300 sq. ft.
of three equally sized floors above ground, a full basement and a
mechanical penthouse. Leo A Daly will complete the restoration in two
phases.

7.3.09 | Fort Myers, FL | Florida Power &
Light is working with the realty group Kitson & Partners to construct
Babcock Ranch, an environmentally friendly city near Fort Myers, FL. Its
electricity will come from the world’s largest solar voltaic power plant,
a $300 million, 75-megawatt plant to be built on-site by Florida Power
& Light. will
include a smart grid to let residents monitor and adjust their energy
consumptions. In addition to having its electricity generated from solar
energy, the entire city is expected to have wireless Internet access and
electric-car chargers.Construction of the city center is scheduled to
begin in June 2010, with the first residential and commercial buildings
targeted for late 2010.

7.3.09 | Indianapolis, IN | Knoll Minneapolis Architecture and Design Manager, Brenda Lemmer began a mentoring program for the next generation of designers. M.A.D.E. (Mentoring A Designer to Evolve) now has made its ways to the KnollIndianapolis/RJE Business Interiors showroom, where interior designers will participate in educational presentations and events. Knoll will host a finale dinner with
principals from selected design firms and all
M.A.D.E. participants. Four lucky
participants also will receive a trip to New York to
visit the Knoll New York Showroom.

7.3.09 | Indianapolis, IN | The Herron School of Art and Design will host, Eero Saarinen: Designs for Every Living. The exhibition, which opened in partnership with Knoll at the Marsh Gallery, 735 W. New York Street, Indianpolis, IN, and runs through July 10, includes archival pieces from the Knoll Museum in East Greenville, PA,
and the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI, as well as
furniture currently in production by Knoll.

Chicago Merchandise Mart, earned gold certification in LEED for
Commercial Interiors. The 13,959 sq. ft. space was designed
by HOK in 2008 and represents the fifth LEED certified showroom housing
the two sibling companies.
