5.29.09 | East Greenville, PA | Knoll published a research study, "Design for Integrated Work," a model for work and the workplace. Knoll's NeoCon 2009 showroom will present new products in the
context of the research initiative. The model has three parts:
- Work modes, which is subdivided into focus (the individual work mode), share (the casual collaborative mode for individual or group spaces), and team work (a more formal group work mode).
- Activity, the link to an organization's culture
- Workspace integration, the flow of people and information between the work modes.
Knoll's showroom will illustrate easy movement between focuses, share, and team work modes, space for collaboration, and emphasis on the use of low panel horizons, and the integration of complementary KnollStudio furniture into workplace
settings.

5.29.09 | Minneapolis, MN | InformeDesign released several new research summaries.
- Acute Care Unit Size and Configuration addressed factors within acute care units. The study concluded that the aging nursing population necessitates designing units that are efficient and ergonomically thought out.
- Windows More Restorative than Nature Viewed on Television compared the effects of three views from an office space on stress recovery. The heart recovery rate was more rapid among subjects who could look out a window versus viewing the same scene on TV. Those with windowless offices or a scene on TV did not show a significant difference in heart rate recovery.

5.29.09 | New York, NY | Humanscale adopted an electronic marketing
initiative that reduces the number of brochures it prints by 90% and saves more
than 1,300 trees.
In 2008, Humanscale printed more than 10 million pages of literature for use in
North America alone, causing large amounts of carbon to be released and raising
fuel consumption. The few pieces of literature that Humanscale will
continue to print will be Forest Stewardship Council certified.

Sustainable Design Contest, which challenged students to submit an idea for
a product, service, or business venture with a social and/or
environmental benefit. Winners of the challenge include:
- Dave Berger, Cooper Union, for Solar Lights, an affordable
solar-powered lighting system.
- John Dreher and Mike Norelli, MIT for MC Shared, a human-centered energy monitoring
system.

design support and construction management services to the U.S. Army Corps of

5.29.09 | New York, NY | Vitra and Parsons The New School for Design announced the winner of the student design competition held during the ICFF 2009. The project will be on
view through June 5 at Vitra's New York Showroom, 29 Ninth Avenue, NYC. The competition challenged four teams of architects, interior
designers, lighting designers and product design students from Parsons to
create domestic vignettes that showcase Vitra pieces in new and
innovative ways. The winning vignette was the "Parabox" installation
designed by Anya Keyser, Emily Mak and Jerry Mejia. The winning group was awarded a trip to
the Boisbuchet summer workshop in Lessac, France.

The event, offering design showcases, exhibitions and installations is organized by DesignPartners (Italy) and Dream Design Factory (Turkey). The theme of the event is lietmotif, Mediterranean Design between Present and Future. June 17 will mark the opening of the third branch of Design Library, located in an old hat factory on the shore of the Golden Horn. Presenting for the first time is Material ConneXion. 5.28.09 | Washington, DC | The Architecture Billings Index was reported at 42.8 for April, down from 43.7 in March. This was the first time since August and September
2008 that the index was above 40 for consecutive months, but the score
still indicates an overall decline in demand for design services. The new projects
inquiry score, however, was 56.8, the second month with very strong inquiries for new projects.
5.28.09 | New York, NY | Pratt Institute's Department of Industrial Design was honored with an ICFF Editors
Award for "Best Design School." Pratt, whose booth exhibited works around the theme of
"Design for a Dollar," was selected as one out of only five design schools
chosen to show at the 2009 ICFF fair, May 16-19. "Design for a Dollar" challenged students to create furniture, lighting, and tabletop designs for the cost
of one dollar, while showing proof that their piece could be
made for the cost of one dollar.

Interior Designers. The mentoring program

Ms. Forrest, an ASID Fellow and 2004 ASID Designer of Distinction, is an interior designer known for the restoration and renovation of

the electrical systems for the new Utah Museum
