In addition to the alarmingly high quota, the Society is concerned that the whalers are targeting humpback whales for the first time in 40 years. Called Operation Migallo, named for an albino humpback sighted in the area, the Sea Shepherd ship, renamed the Steve Irwin, uses reconnaissance helicopters to find the whaling ships before they can fire upon the whales. An employee at DIRTT who also worked on the donation team, shared her concerns for the high cost of supporting Operation Migaloo with Mogens Smed, founder of DIRTT. Mr. Smed not only personally chose to support the project but offered company support as well.
