1.18.08 | London, UK | Zaha Hadid was named the winner in a design competition for the Eli and Edythe Broad Art Museum at Michigan State University. The competition began as a result of a $26 million gift from the Broads to fund a new museum focusing on modern and contemporary art. Upon completion, the museum will be Ms. Hadid's first building on a university campus and her second completed project in the United States. The 41,000 sq. ft. building on three levels will be constructed of steel and concrete with an aluminum and glass exterior and adjoined by an expansive outdoor sculpture garden. More than 18,000 sq. ft. will hold collections in special exhibitions, modern and contemporary art, new media. photography, works on paper and the permanent collection encyclopedic. Additional space will include an education center, museum shop, visitor cafe, gathering space and staff offices. Groundbreaking will take place in the fall of 2008 with a projected completion date in 2010.

1.18. 08 | Vancouver, BC | Iredale Group Architecture was selected to design the $20 million Robert Bateman Art and Environmental Education Centre at Royal Roads University in Victoria. The goal is to design the building beyond LEED standards so that it restores and regenerates the environment.
The building, situated on a former wetland than was drained nearly a hundred years ago, will incorporate solar and thermal energy as well as
on-site wastewater treatment. The centre will house a collection of donated original prints by Mr. Bateman as well as sketch books, correspondence and photos. Construction is scheduled to being in the fall of 2008 with a completion date of 2010.

In addition to the alarmingly high quota, the Society is concerned that the whalers are targeting humpback whales for the first time in 40 years. Called Operation Migallo, named for an albino humpback sighted in the area, the Sea Shepherd ship, renamed the Steve Irwin, uses reconnaissance helicopters to find the whaling ships before they can fire upon the whales. An employee at DIRTT who also worked on the donation team, shared her concerns for the high cost of supporting Operation Migaloo with Mogens Smed, founder of DIRTT. Mr. Smed not only personally chose to support the project but offered company support as well.

Entrants will be asked to ponder 100 years ahead such questions as whether the White House of 2108 will be heated by pocket sized cold fusion reactors or if San Francisco might be reduced to an underwater pacific theme park or if Atlanta will stretch hundreds of miles in each direction, The three competition sites and dates are the Union Station in Washington, DC on January 15, the Ferry Building in San Francisco on January 20, the Underground Atlanta on January 29. The competition celebrates the History Channel series, Cities of the Underworld and is sponsored by Infiniti and IBM, in partnership with the American Institute of Architects and the American Society for Civil Engineers. The national winner will receive as much as $15,000 for its creative efforts and national recognition. The
designs will be developed in just seven days and submissions will be
assembled in just three hours during a public forum followed by a jury

The program began 15 years ago to promote environmental best practices. Four Shaw facilities in California received the WRAP designation for diverting 14 million pounds of recyclables, resulting in an estimated $1.6 million in savings. Shaw is currently working on a wet lint capture system for further waste reduction.
