HOK Hires Two For Chicago Office

11.06.07 | Chicago, IL | HOK made two additions to their Chicago office. David Dike comes aboard as Senior Designer for the International Studio and Scott Lumsden will became Senior Project Manager for the architectural practice.  Mr. Dike previously was with The Formalist, a firm he founded in 2002. He also worked at VOA Associates as Senior Project Designer. Notable projects include the Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago and the Citibank Center at the Acropolis in Santo Domingo.  Mr. Lumsden also was with VOA Associates as Director of Construction Services. He has training both as an architect and as a military officer specializing in construction and contingency operations.

Doo Wop Motels Win State Planning Award

11.06.07 | Wildwood Crest, NJ | The New Jersey American Planning Association Annual Award went to a recent study developed by Stantec Consulting Services to conserve the Doo Wop Motels. Recommendations include changing state and local land use controls, using federal historic tax incentives, and balancing state assessment policy for overnight occupancy taxes.  Already underway are efforts to improve beach access, additional beach parting and constructing a second dune line.

ASID Illinois Announces Scholarship Winners

11.06.07 | Chicago, IL | The American Society of Interior Designers - Illinois Chapter announced the three winners of the Richard R. Smith Memorial Scholarship. They are Jennifer Jimenez and Megan Lopez, both from the Harrington College of Design, and Tyson Schrock from the Illinois Institute of Art Chicago. Each winner will receive $1,000 to offset tuition, books and supplies.

HOK Chicago Names Rich Drozd Director Of Architecture

11.06.07 | Chicago, IL | Rich Drozd was named Director of Architecture for HOK Chicago.  He is a thirteen-year veteran of HOK, having worked in London, Los Angeles and St Louis. Prior to joining HOK, Mr Drozd worked at Fujikawa Johnson and Associates and Skidmore Owings and Merrill. His projects include the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and Barclays Bank in London.

Four Firms Named For Sheikh Zayed National Museum

11.06.07 | UAE | UK's Foster & Partners, Norway's Snohetta, Shingeru Ban of Japan and Moriyama & Teshima of Canada are on the short list for the planned Sheikh Zayed National Museum in the Cultural District of Saadiyat Island.  The short-listed concepts include designs that reflect Islamic geometries, the natural colours of UAE and all meet the design criteria of environmental efficiency and sustainability, paying tribute to Sheikh Zayed's reputation for greening the desert. The winner will be announced on December 3. The museum will span 130,000 sq. ft. and will feature five galleries, an education centre, threatre, shops, a cafe and visitor services area.

International Design Awards Recognize T5 Cart From Humanscale

11.06.07 | New York, NY | The T5 Point-of-Care Technology Cart from Humanscale was named the Industrial and Life Science Design First Category Winner in the 2007 International Design Awards.  It also earned first prize in the iDA Medical/Scientific Machinery category and will be featured in the 2007 iDA design book. The T5 was recognized for its ergonomic solutions for laptop computers and PCs.  It offers easy mobility and one-touch adjustable keyboard technology and is made of 50% recycled materials and is itself 95% recyclable.

Allsteel's Santa Monica Resource Center Earns Leed Silver

11.2.07 | Muscatine, IA | –Allsteel’'s Santa Monica Resource Center has earned silver certification in LEED for Commercial Interiors. Allsteel’'s Santa Monica showroom, which measures 16,000 square feet, was designed by the architectural firm HOK. Allsteel and the HOK design team also incorporated a day-lighting system that adjusts the level of interior lighting based on how much natural light is coming in and maintains a constant lighting level all day, while decreasing overall energy consumption.

Allsteel Spooktacular Haunts Motor City

11.2.07 | Detroit, MI | Allsteel hosted more that 260 of Detroit's architecture, design, real estate, and corporte professionals, dressed in costume, for the fifth annual Allsteel Spooktacular. This year's party, organized by Allsteel, Gunlocke, and local dealer Interior Environments, took place at Forte restaurant in Birmingham, MI. Rossetti Associates took home the top prize in the group costume contest when they came dressed as a garden complete with flowers, a farmer and a weed.

Humanscale Cinto Chair Picks Up Four Awards

11.2.07 | New York, NY | Humanscale’s Cinto stacking chair has picked up four awards. The 2007 International Design Awards named the Cinto its Product Design of the Year. In addition, Cinto was a First Category Winner and first-place finisher in the Interior Furniture category. The Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization also recognized Cinto with a 2007 Good Design Award in its Product Design category.Cinto, which is 100% recyclable, was designed for quick and easy disassembly. Molded into the bottom of each Cinto is a phone number that owners may call when their chair reaches the end of its life.Humanscale will provide assistance to owners to help ensure that their Cintos get recycled.

AIA Issues RFQ For Headquarters Renovation

David Thurm Named AIA Public Director

IIDA Plans Student Mentoring Week

Carolina’s Holds 2007 Designer Forum

Ceramic Tiles Of Italy Design Competition 2008

Herman Miller, Inc., Issues 2007 Sustainability Report

11.01.07 | Zeeland, MI | Herman Miller's second annual report on sustainability addresses the company's progress in meeting social, environmental and economic objectives, known as the "triple bottom line" of sustainability. Seoul Named World Design Capital

11.01.07 | San Francisco, CA | Seoul was named "World Design Capital (WDC) 2010" by the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design at the closing session of the ICSID Congress held at the Masonic Auditorium in San Francisco. Seoul will play the role of the world's capital of design for one year.The international competition was judged by a five-member jury including designers Marc Newson and Patricia Urquiola, Sergio Chiamparino, mayor of Torino, Italy, the WDC winner for 2008; Dr. Peter Zec, president of ICSID; and Jacques Lange, president of ICOGRADA.

Ray Anderson Named Environmental Hero By Time Magazine
