7.2.09 | New York, NY | Caroline Baumann was named acting director
of the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, effective
July 13. Since joining Cooper-Hewitt in 2001, Ms. Baumann has served as
director of development, director of external affairs and deputy
director. From 1995 to 2001, Baumann worked at The Museum of Modern Art, where she
raised funds for the museum's Yoshio Taniguchi building project among
other accomplishments. Ms. Baumann will serve as acting director while a 10-member
committee searches for a permanent director.

Hyatt Regency Danang Resort and Spa on China Beach in Vietnam. Considered one of the most luxurious beaches in the world, the project
will include residences and a 200-room hotel. The hotel is expected to open in 2010.
7.2.09 | Salt Lake City, UT |Prescott Muir, a locally-based
practicing architect, was named director for the University of Utah School of Architecture. Mr. Muir, who has worked as an adjunct professor at the university since 1993, has
been influential in designing various projects in Salt Lake, including
the Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center and the Bridge Project for
Artspace. Mr Muir is a past president of the American Institute of Architects Utah and a member of the College of Fellows of the AIA.

It will be the 11th year that Orlando has hosted the ceramic tile and natural stone show at the Orange County Convention Center, 9400 Universal Blvd. In 2011, the show will move westward to the Los Angeles Convention Center where the inaugural Coverings exposition took place 21 years ago.

6.30.09 | New York, NY | MayorSe-Hoon Oh and a delegation from Seoul, South Korea, had a guided tour of New York City's recently opened High Line elevated park. The mayor was in the city to receive a United Nation's award for hosting the C40 Large Cities Climate Summit in May 2009. Seoul has been named World Design Capital 2010 and currently has major architecture and infrastructure projects underway, and the High Line is considered a significant reference for Seoul's redevelopment plan. The High Line is a 1.5-mile-long public park built on a defunct elevated rail line running along Manhattan’s lower west side.

by Design issued a Request for Proposals. The Center is seeking applicants for the 2010 Sustainable Design Assessment Team Program (SDAT), a program that has assisted over 40
communities with long-term sustainability plans addressing a range of
local issues. Two rounds of application review will be held in September and December 2009 with applications received respectively by September 18 and November 13.

6.26.09 | Washington, DC |The Architecture Billings Index (ABI) reveals that an
economic recovery has stalled. The May ABI rating
was 42.9, nearly identical to the 42.8 mark in April. This score still
indicates an overall decline in demand for design services (any score
above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The new projects inquiry
score, however, was 55.2, the third straight month with a score in the mid-50’s.

6.26.09 | Green Bay, WI | KI Genius architectural walls were selected for the Spivey Station Surgery Center, Atlanta, GA. Using Genius walls, the 12-person conference room can be reconfigured to expand the capacity to 100, and with just four to five basic parts
required, quick
installation is possible with minimal disruption. Genius
walls also optimized acoustics and more privacy than standard drywall with its 3.5" thickness and 22-gauge steel shells. In addition to Genius walls, the entire facility was outfited with KI furniture.

6.24.09 | Tallinin, Estonia | Bjarke Ingels Group, Copenhagen, Denmark, together with Structural Engineering firm, Adams Kara Taylor, UK, won the International Competition to design Tallinn's City Hall. The 2-stage competition with feedback from the jury, enabled the firm to rearrange its design to meet citizens' needs and unexpected demands. The structure with porous canopy brings in daylight and a view of the public service market to remind administrators of the public they serve. At the center of the project is the Town Hall Tower that will house the City Council.
