7.3.09 | Indianapolis, IN | The Furniture of Eero Saarinen: Designs for Every Living, the first exhibition devoted solely to the furniture of Eero Saarinen, opened at the Herron School of Art and Design. The exhibition, which opened in partnership with Knoll at Herron's Marsh Gallery, examines the range of furniture designs from one of the world's most important architects of the 1950's. On June 30, Knoll hosted a lunch to celebrate the opening with young designers from the M.A.D.E. (Mentoring A Designer to Evolve) program and the principals from their firms. Later that evening, 225 local architects, interior designers, students and members of the design community gathered at the Marsh Gallery to view the exhibition and listen to keynote speaker, Benjamin Pardo, Knoll Design Director. The next morning, Knoll hosted a breakfast for local architects and Pardo led a conversation about the past, present and future of Knoll, recapping Knoll's design history, highlighting events from NeoCon and presenting what was to come. The exhibition, which will be up in Herron's Marsh Gallery, 735 W. New York Street, Indianapolis, IN, through July 10, includes archival pieces from the Knoll Museum in East Greenville, PA, and the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, MI, as well as furniture currently in production by Knoll. 5.29.09 | London, United Kingdom | This summer The Architecture Foundation presents a series of
conversations concerning contemporary architectural responses to
ecological imperatives. Spread over three evenings, the series will
invite responses from practitioners working in areas as diverse as Sao
Paulo, Abu Dhabi and Antarctica; and at a scale ranging from the tabula
rasa masterplan to one-off buildings made from salvaged materials. The
Architecture Foundation asks: Can the natural and man-made co-exist
symbiotically? What happens when architecture is required within the
extremes of the natural world? And how can architecture respond to the
challenge of living in, and with a rapidly changing world?
The series is programmmed in response to the forthcoming Barbican exhibition, Radical Nature: Art and Architecture for a Changing Planet 1969-2009. Futureproofing the City: Zedfactory, Foster+Partners, R/E/D 23 July 2009, 7.30pm Bill Dunster of ZEDfactory; Gerard Evenden from Foster + Partners; and Susannah Hagan, University of Brighton and R/E/D; represent three very different approaches to the ecological challenges of urbanity and the question of sustainable living. Gerard Evenden will present Foster's design for Masdar, an entirely self-sustaining 'city from zero' in the Arabian Desert; Susannah Hagan will address how to retrofit a rapidly sprawling metropolis, taking Sao Paulo as a case study; and Bill Dunster, architect of celebrated eco-settlement BedZED, will present ZEDfactory's current solutions to contexts as diverse as China and Gaza. Superuse: Jan Jongert, 2012Architecten 20 August 2009, 7.30pm Jan Jongert from 2012Architecten, will present the Dutch practice's pioneering work in re-use, research and adaptation. Theirs is an architecture that sees Audi 100 windscreens become shelving for a shoe-shop, and mountains of washing machines recombined to produce a futuristic mobile studio. Projects such as Recyclicity and the print and online initiative Superuse, extend their agenda yet further and provide a suite of new ideas on functionality and design within a sustainable framework. Recently celebrated in Icon magazine's list of 20 architects who are making the future and changing the way we think, 2012's architecture sets an agenda for new attitudes towards materiality, design strategy and play. With and Against Nature: Hugh Broughton, Hugh Broughton Architects and Michael Pawlyn, Exploration Architecture 8 October 2009, 7.30pm A conversation on architecture in direct dialogue with the natural world. Michael Pawlyn, pioneer of biomimicry, will present Exploration Architecture's designs for a self-irrigating greenhouse and forest in the Sahara desert, whilst Hugh Broughton will showcase his practice's Antarctic outposts, including the British Antarctic Survey's Halley VI, currently on snowy site. Can extreme climates be civilised? Broughton and Pawlyn will discuss why and how, in an evening with one foot in the desert, and the other in the Antarctic. Online: www.barbican.org/eticketing Telephone (9am-8.00pm): 020 7638 8891 Vemue: Redgrave room, The Barbican Centre, Silk Street, London EC2Y 8DS. 4.17.09 | Muskegon, MI | The Muskegon Museum of Art announces its creation of the traveling design
exhibition Good Design: Stories from Herman Miller. The exhibition opens
in Muskegon on August 20, 2009, and will subsequently tour as many as 15
American cities into 2013. The exhibition explores the collaborative
problem-solving design process employed at the world-renowned and West
Michigan-based furniture company, Herman Miller, Inc. The interpretive
exhibition is organized by the Muskegon Museum of Art (MMA) in
collaboration with The Henry Ford, Dearborn, Michigan, drawing upon that
institution's Herman Miller Design Collection, a comprehensive archive
of the company's innovative processes and products.
MMA Executive Director Judith A. Hayner''s long-standing interest in modern design sparked a dream of showcasing original designed artifacts along with their drawings and prototypes. This exhibition is the fruition of her goal. "With Herman Miller operating in our back yard, it is important for the Museum to hold up and examine the process of design as its been practiced in West Michigan for nearly eight decades. We decided to focus on case studies that explore design problems and solutions created by some of the talented artists who have created masterpieces of modern design for the company, and continue to do so today." The inspiration for the exhibition came from the recent book Herman Miller: the Purpose of Design by design scholar and authority John R. Berry, first published by Rizzoli International in 2004. A second edition with updated content will be released to coincide with the exhibition's opening at the MMA. Mr. Berry also agreed to be the exhibition's guest curator. An extraordinary partnership with The Henry Ford made available the vast resources of that institution's Herman Miller Design Collection, most of which has never before been on public view. Finally, Herman Miller agreed to underwrite the exhibition's organization while affording the MMA the academic and esthetic freedom to critically explore its legacy. Commenting on the idea behind the exhibition, Mr. Berry observed, "Many people are confused by the difference between art and design. Design is a noun, a verb, and a problem solving process. It is art with a purpose. Good design requires a clear understanding of the particular need, conditions, constraints, and opportunities. Good design does not happen in a vacuum. At Herman Miller, design is the means and the end," said Berry. "It is the starting point and the destination. Since 1931, not long after its founding, Herman Miller had embraced design as a way to improve people's lives, and through that goal, they created new industries and some of the most iconic objects of the last century. Charles and Ray Eames's molded plywood Lounge Chair, George Nelson's Marshmallow Sofa, and Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick's Aeron Chair which populates so many offices today, are all products of Herman Miller, Inc." The exhibition displays will be arranged to present viewers with four case studies stories chosen to embody four different active characteristics of "good design," as a result of the problem-solving ethos of Herman Miller, Inc: - Case Study #1: Ergonomics (Seating), Good Design EXPLORES - Case Study #2: White Collar Work (Action Office), Good Design INQUIRES - Case Study #3: Graphic Communications, Good Design ENGAGES - Case Study #4: Mid-Century Classics, Good Design ENDURES Mr. Berry explained the organization of the exhibition: "Each object grouping started with identifying a need to furnish a new type of living space, for healthier seating, to effectively communicate a message, or to support new kinds of work." The exhibition uses drawings, models, prototypes, photographs, oral histories, and original designed objects to showcase the creation and evolution of many masterpieces of 20th and 21st century design by such artists as Gilbert Rohde, Ray & Charles Eames, George Nelson, Alexander Girard, Robert Probst, Steve Frykholm, Bill Stumpf and Don Chadwick, and others. Good Design: Stories from Herman Miller has been organized for national tour by the Muskegon Museum of Art, Michigan, which was founded in 1912 as a division of the Muskegon Public Schools. The Museum is renowned for its fine permanent collections of American and European Art, including works by Curry, Hopper, Homer, Chase, Whistler, Van Cleve, Cranach, Pissarro, Rodin, Sisley, and Bonnard. It uses these resources to present exhibitions and public programs designed to foster life-long study and appreciation of the visual arts. The exhibition has been created in collaboration with The Henry Ford in Dearborn, Michigan, through the generous support of Herman Miller, Inc. The exhibition is curated by John Berry, Holland; coordinated by Timothy Chester, Grand Rapids; designed by Judy Hillman and Barb Loveland, Hillman Associates, Saugatuck; and fabricated by Vincent Faust, Kalamazoo. RELATED PROGRAMS & INTERACTIVE GALLERY Visitors can explore how good design works with an interactive educational gallery that will house hands-on design activities. The gallery will be open during the run of the exhibition at the Muskegon Museum of Art. On Thursday, August 27, the MMA's free Brown Bag Film series will feature 901: After 45 Years of Working from The Stories of Herman Miller Volume 1, which documents the discovery of Charles and Rae Eames design work during the closing of their studio 901, and Powers of Ten--a well known short film by the Eames's. The MMA will announce other related programs in advance of the August opening of Good Design: Stories from Herman Miller. |

6.23.09 | Houston, TX | Workplace professionals from around the world will meet in Orlando, Fla., to analyze the trends and new products impacting today’s built environment during the International Facility Management Association’s World Workplace 2009 Conference & Expo, Oct. 7-9 at the Orange County Convention Center.
Recognized as the world’s premier educational and networking conference for facility managers and those in related fields, World Workplace brings industry leaders from the world’s top business and government organizations together with educators and exhibitors to focus on the future of the work environment. Now in its 30th year, the conference will feature more than 75 educational sessions and new product demonstrations by manufacturers from around the globe. “World Workplace is regarded as the single most informative facility-related event in our industry for good reason — it’s the ‘one-stop shop’ for the solutions facility professionals need today in preparation to meet the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow,” said Thomas L. Mitchell Jr., CFM, CFMJ, incoming chairman of the IFMA board of directors. “It’s more than just a conference and expo providing education, new products and services, and peer networking. It’s a professionally and personally rewarding experience, and holding it in the 'land of entertainment' this year will enhance what will already be a memorable event.” In a year when many people are focusing on less, World Workplace is offering attendees more. This year’s conference will feature an opening keynote presentation from Andrew Winston — esteemed author, speaker and globally recognized expert on green business — as well as presentations from four concurrent power speakers, who will replace the conference’s traditional closing keynote session. On Wednesday, Oct. 7, Winston will deliver the presentation “Green Recovery: Get Lean, Get Smart and Emerge from the Downturn on Top,” based on his upcoming book. He will make the case that going green — especially during an economic slowdown — saves money to help you survive, drives innovation to create value for the long run and represents a fundamentally new and better way of doing business. The conference will also offer attendees a glimpse into the future of the workplace, as they get the first look at the new products and services debuting in 2010. The World Workplace expo floor will feature more than 200 exhibiting companies — including 3M, ARAMARK, IBM, Lowe’s and UGL Unicco — and will be freely open to the public this year. Additionally, expo hours have been extended, giving exhibitors and attendees 11 dedicated hours of interaction on Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 7-8. Another highlight of the World Workplace 2009 expo will be the Green Zone, an exclusive section of the expo floor reserved for those companies offering environmentally friendly products and services. More than 75 exhibitors will be featured in the Green Zone this year, including organizations such as the Alliance for Sustainable Built Environments and the U.S. Department of State, as well as companies including AT&T, CORT, Kimball Office and Kohler. Complementing the expo will be World Workplace 2009 educational sessions. Organized into eight different tracks, these sessions offer facility professionals the continuing education courses they need to meet the challenges posed by today’s workplace. Session topics include strategies for greening the office, the impact of new legislation on sustainable building design, and how to deal with workplace violence and natural disasters. Representatives from AOL, Duke University, and the U.S. Air Force and General Services Administration, among others, will present. World Workplace educational sessions will be held on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 8-9. Conference attendees can add to their Orlando experience by attending any of six different facility tours throughout the city. Among the facilities open for touring will be the Walt Disney World® Resort, Lockheed Martin, Darden Restaurants corporate headquarters and JetBlue University. Facility tours will be held before the conference begins, on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 5-6. Following in the tradition of previous conferences, this year’s event has again received Cleaner & Greener® certification from Leonardo Academy, a non-profit environmental consulting group. Organizations seeking Cleaner & Greener certification make a commitment to gather emission reductions, offsetting the emissions caused by events. Early registration for World Workplace 2009 is available through July 17. To learn more about the conference or to register, visit www.worldworkplace.org. Members of the media may register at no cost here. IFMA’s World Workplace Conference & Expo is an annual three-day educational and networking event focused on the future of the built environment. Building on the professional development opportunities available through the association year-round, the World Workplace experience includes a conference focused entirely on education and an exposition incorporating product demonstration and instruction. This year’s conference will be held Oct. 7-9, 2009, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla. |

MOVIES AS AN INSPIRATION FOR LIGHTING DESIGN Philip Gabriel, FIALD, Gabriel Mackinnon, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada Filmmakers have created great experiences with the use of light and many may serve as inspiration for application of light in the built environment. By analyzing key films that present people in a world of unique light, participants will understand methods to manipulate light to create mood or simulate action. CONSERVATION AND PRESERVATION: THE ROLE OF LIGHTING IN REVITALIZING OUR PAST Randy Burkett, FIALD, Randy Burkett Lighting Design, St. Louis, MO USA Edwin Rambusch, Rambusch Lighting, Jersey City, NJ USA David Harris, FAIA, Utah State Capitol Complex, Salt Lake City, Utah USA Lighting is an integral part of our architectural heritage. When we are entrusted with the task of giving new life to older buildings, especially as conservationists or preservationists, we must clearly define what role lighting will play. This seminar, presented jointly by a lighting designer, an architect and an historic luminaire manufacturer, will involve several real-world examples and case studies, including the just completed 7-year restoration of the Utah State Capitol. THE LIGHTING DESIGNER AS A PROFESSIONAL: GETTING CLIENTS TO RECOGNIZE THE VALUE OF OUR SERVICES Randy Burkett, FIALD, Randy Burkett Lighting Design, St. Louis, MO USA This session will explore one of the most difficult issues facing the IALD lighting design community in today's competitive market - how do we make our role indispensably valuable to our clients and fellow professionals. Included in this session: What is lighting design anyway? Who is doing it? How can an IALD lighting design professional differentiate themselves from other practitioners? Where is the market going? A variety of resources/ideas for furthering our clients understanding of what w do and how we can be vital to a project's success will be shared. VALUE ADDED DISTRIBUTION FOR AN ALTERNATIVE DELIVERY METHOD OF LIGHTING PRODUCTS (AND HOW IT CAN REDUCE FRUSTRATION ON YOUR PROJECTS) Charles K. Thompson, IALD, Archillume Lighting Design, Austin, TX USA Mike Gilbert, American Light/Facility Solutions Group, Austin, TX USA How often is your balloon burst because of difficulty with pricing and availability? Does the effort become confrontational and deteriorate as it progresses? Take a look at a better way to help your owners and architects realize increased value in their projects. This seminar will address specific changes to traditional delivery methods and how to implement these changes. SIX FIGURE $ TAKE HOME LIGHTING DESIGN Earl Levin, IALD, Keylight + Shadow, Lake Oswego, OR USA This presentation is a cookbook approach to profitable lighting design that should consistently generate an annual six figure income for independent, self-employed lighting designers. It includes an outline of necessary elements with useable formats that can be easily integrated into any lighting design firm, with an example of a job from start to finish so attendees can see how this process works. Other topics include a profile of a profitable client, preparing automated contract proposals in record time, and tools you will need to manage and communicate your designs. LIGHTING AND COGNITIVE WELL BEING Robert G. Davis, Litecontrol, Hanson, MA USA Research in visual perception, cognitive psychology and environmental perception has produced some surprising results over the past 30 years, little of which has been formally incorporated into architectural lighting design. What do we know today that we did not know before? How can the knowledge be used in designing lighting that provides the best environment for human activities involved in each space? This seminar serves to bridge the gap between research findings and lighting design practices. SEVEN RECIPES IN ECOLOGICAL LIGHTING DESIGN Kaoru Mende, IALD, Lighting Planners Associates, Inc., Tokyo, Japan Ecology has become one of the most important key words. It has become very critical to engage with energy efficient light sources and to calculate watts per square meter in every space in our work. However, it is even more critical to find the right lighting methods that are effective to reduce energy and to avoid unnecessary investments. It is not as simple as one may think. We as architectural lighting designers look for smarter ways to achieve ecological lighting. In this seminar, Mr. Mende will share seven hidden recipes that he has found in numerous projects over the past 30 years. THE MAGIC POTION: MIXING ENERGY AND QUALITY INTO A VIABLE LIGHTING METRIC Fred Oberkircher, Educator IALD, Texas Christian University, Ft. Worth, TX USA "Lighting Power Density," the formula for an energy conscious future has become the bane of lighting designers as code standards and legislatures have continue to reduce the densities as a positive action toward energy independence. Lighting designers continue to question at what point lighting quality begins to suffer. However, the dynamics within the lighting industry are shifting and efforts are underway to create a viable metric that would provide an alternate to LPD and a metric for lighting quality. This presentation will identify the players involved in these efforts, describe in detail the current state both individually and collectively, and provide indications of potential success. LED'S - A MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR AND THE MAP TO GET YOU OUT! Eric Lind, Lutron Electronics, Coopersburg, PA USA Ardra Zinkon, Associate IALD, Tec Inc. Engineering & Design, Columbus, OH USA Jimalee Dakin, Visa Lighting, Milwaukee, WI USA Paula Ziegenbein, Osram Sylvania, Danvers, MA USA How can a lighting designer have confidence in an emerging technology that has yet to be defined by a set of standards? This panel discussion will provide an update on the current "State of Standard," review a basic LED checklist to assist the lighting designer in understanding and writing a successful LED specification to meet project needs followed by "Best of Class" examples of successful LED projects. 7.2.09 | Washington, DC | RealWorld DesignWeek (RWDW), the annual nationwide student mentoring program created by the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), has officially opened registration for practicing interior designers to sign up as mentors. The career development-mentoring program offers a unique and exclusive one-on-one experience that pairs ASID student members with ASID interior design professionals and Industry Partners from Nov. 1-7, 2009. "RealWorld DesignWeek is a great way for interior designers to give back to the profession by mentoring and molding the next generation of interior designers," says Deborah L. Forrest, FASID, RealWorld DesignWeek national spokesperson. "Students need this now more than ever, which is why I'm asking every interior designer and ASID Industry Partner to take the time to host a student during this year's RealWorld DesignWeek." Now in its second year, RealWorld DesignWeek is the first cohesive, national program aimed at educating future interior designers through in-person experience. It empowers students to succeed in the industry and build relationships with the design community, and provides them with the tools to jump-start their careers. The inaugural RealWorld DesignWeek in 2008 received great reviews from both mentors and students alike, with more than 1500 participants. "I looked forward to the experience from the day I registered and it was so much more than I expected," said Jeannine Lima, Student Member ASID from the Art Institute of Atlanta. "RealWorld DesignWeek was amazing! I hosted five students, one each day of the week, and was able to show them first hand the day-to-day operations of an interior design firm. This included attending our weekly staff meeting, a lunch CEU, a construction site, a vendor presentation and meetings with potential new clients," said Rita Carson Guest, FASID and an ASID Past President. "They also met with my design team to review current projects, examine interior design construction documents and learn about the design process we use. Every student was sincere about their studies and found the ASID experience to be special." Created and run by ASID, RealWorld DesignWeek is sponsored by Sherwin Williams, Industry Partner of ASID. Partners include national media partner Metropolis magazine and print partner Canfield & Tack Inc. For more information, visit www.ASID.org/RWDW. About ASID: The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) is a community of people, designers, industry representatives, educators and students, committed to interior design. 5.7.09 | New York, NY | Suzanne Tick is exhibiting some of her work in an upcoming show
called InDisposed.
InDisposed highlights the twin dichotomies defining contemporary design: sustainability versus wastefulness, and preciousness versus mass production. Although divergent in approach and aesthetic, both extremes—i.e. green design and limited-edition furnishings—reject throwaway culture to prioritize permanence over the ephemeral, while trashing the very idea of disposability. While it may be noble to conserve resources, save money, and consume less, one thing that should never be reused, recycled, or reduced is an idea. About 20 designers will be involved, including local and international talent, as well as architects, artists, and product designers. The opening is Thursday May 14, 6-10pm. The show runs May 15-20 at Studio X, 180 Varick Street, Suite 1610, NYC. Gallery open to the public 10-6, closed Sunday. 7.2.09 | Alexandria, VA | The planning has begun for Coverings 2010, next April 27-30, when the international super show of ceramic tile and natural stone returns to familiar turf in Orlando and the Orange County Convention Center. Then, come 2011, the show will be making a strategic move westward, heading to the Los Angeles Convention Center. “Orlando is practically home base for Coverings,” said Jennifer Hoff, president of events for National Trade Productions, which manages and produces the show. “It will be our 11th year there, and it has a proven track record for us. We know it can accommodate the size and scope of the show, is accessible for both domestic and international travelers, and is in a core region for tile and stone business. But, for several years Coverings has had its eye on the West Coast since it, too, is a critical tile and stone market. Though there’s been an aggressive outreach to build attendance from this area, it’s time to be even more targeted. So, we’re going to take the show to the proverbial mountain.” The inaugural Coverings exposition was staged 21 years ago in Los Angeles and returned there—or, at least nearby (Anaheim)— two additional times in its early past. Chicago, which most recently was the scene for Coverings this past year and in 2007, yielded its share of advantages, including a spike in attendance among architects and designers. It also helped nudge the show a little closer to its West Coast goal. According to Hoff, “We hope to return to the Windy City in the future, but Los Angeles will enable Coverings to tap into the potential that the Pacific Coast offers.” Coverings is sponsored by ASCER (Ceramic Tile Manufacturers Association of Spain), Confindustria Ceramica (Italian Association of Ceramics), Tile Council of North America (TCNA), Ceramic Tile Distributors Association (CTDA), and National Tile Contractors Association (NTCA). For more information on exhibiting at Coverings 2010, visit www.coverings.com or contact NTP, Coverings Show Management, at 703.683.8500. About Coverings Coverings is the premier international trade fair and expo dedicated exclusively to showcasing the newest in ceramic tile and natural stone. It has grown to be the largest and most important show of its kind in the U.S., featuring exhibitors from more than 50 countries and attracting thousands of distributors, retailers, fabricators, contractors and specifiers, architectural and design professionals, builders and real estate developers, plus the press and journalists who cover this vital and dynamic industry. Coverings is the stage for introducing some of the most innovative tile and stone products in the world. The exposition also serves as a valuable resource for continuing education for all categories of attendees, with informative, accredited seminars and live demonstration sessions conducted throughout the four days and all free of charge. |
