Chemetal Introduces Two Steel Designs
ChemetalThe more linear 381 Aged Steel appears as a slab of forgotten offal, luckily discovered beneath a pile of metal slats. In fact, both are produced in-house by Chemetal with a remarkably simple process: water, sea
salt, and the company’s long experience creating metal designs. The look of Weathered Steel was an R&D item that almost overnight became a runway backdrop for Hervé Leger at NYC Fashion Week.
While Chemetal usually works with softer metals like aluminum, copper, and brass, the company found the look of rusted steel panels irresistible, and took the necessary steps to make this a usable product in commercial interiors. Color and tone are closely monitored for manufacturing
consistency, and each sheet is lightly top coated to prevent heavy “rust rub off.” Also, Chemetal can custom cut the 4-ft. by 8-ft. by .025-in.-thick steel designs to size.
Early feedback from the design community, both at NeoCon 2009 and through spec rep visits, has been among the most positive Chemetal has received for any product introduction. Weathered Steel and Aged Steel are additions to Chemetal’s 300 Series, which includes 18 oxidized and patinaed copper and brass designs. In this Series, every sheet is a unique work of art created by hand.
Like many Chemetal designs– which contribute to LEED with up to 85% recycled content–Weathered and Aged Steel contain 30% recycled content.
