Perkins Eastman Completes Langone Medical Center's Outpatient Surgery Center

design firm Perkins Eastman joins the medical staff and leadership of NYU
Langone Medical Center in recognizing the completion of a new 22,000 sf
Outpatient Surgery facility at 333 E. 38th Street, dedicated solely to the
needs of patients undergoing specialized orthopaedic surgical procedures that
do not require an overnight hospital stay. The center will focus on minimally
invasive orthopaedic procedures including shoulder, elbow and wrist
arthroscopies, knee and ankle arthroscopies, ACL reconstruction, rotator cuff
repair, fracture fixation of extremities and hand surgery..
Designed by Perkins Eastman, the interior reflects the latest thinking in surgical technology and efficient, patient-friendly architectural design. The reception desk and sunlight-filled family waiting area are just inside the entrance, and nearby is a private pre-operative room, with individual dressing rooms and lockers. Behind automatic sliding-glass doors are four operating rooms (OR), each able to accommodate a large surgical team and state-of-the-art of equipment. The unit features ultrasonic decontamination machines, computerized steam sterilizers for surgical hardware, and carbon dioxide devices for sterilizing more delicate items, such as video equipment.
In addition to special air-filtration systems, the operating rooms are equipped with positive-pressure ventilation, ensuring that air always flows outward, preventing airborne microbes from entering. Each OR is accessible from both an outside corridor and a shared internal sub-sterile core, where surgical equipment is stored for easy access.
“This project represents the future of world-class surgical environments and matches the high standards and quality of care that NYU Langone’s orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, and support staff provide to their patients every day,” says Mary-Jean Eastman FAIA. “We are thrilled to continue a nine-year relationship with NYU Langone Medical Center, completing more than 40 projects totaling over 300,000 sf including the Rita J. and Stanley H. Kaplan Comprehensive Cancer Center, NYU Child Study Center, consolidated Department of Radiology, among others.”
