Celebrate Architecture + Design To Open With Sand Sculpture Competition

10.26.09 | Miami, FL | The American Institute of Architects opens Celebrate Architecture + Design Nov. 1 with its annual sand sculpture competition on Crandon Beach.

The contest kicks off three weeks of architecture and design-related events, including lectures, receptions, exhibits, tours and competitions, and culminates in a gala at which design award winners will be announced.

All events are open to the public, although participation in competitions may be limited to professionals. The schedule is available at www.aiamiami.com. Here are some highlights:

• Digital Drafting SandBlast sand sculpture, noon Nov. 1 on Crandon Beach, Key Biscayne; free with $5 park fee. Competition limited to architects, designers and architecture students.

• Opening of FIU's Festival of the Trees, a design competition to create holiday ``trees,'' 6:30 p.m. Nov. 12 at Miami Art Space, 244 NW 35th St. Tickets $55 at www.festivalofthetrees.net.

• Historic Preservation Association of Coral Gables Homes Tour, noon-4 p.m. Nov. 14. Tour of five historically and architecturally significant homes. Tickets $30; patrons ticket, $50, includes a reception and lecture by architect Jorge Hernandez, trustee of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, at 10:45 a.m. 305-448-7488.
