WAC Lighting Sponsors Solar Energy Decathlon Project Competition
7.17.09 | Garden City, NY | WAC Lighting is sponsoring a Cornell University
Team competing in The Solar Energy Decathlon, an international,
interdisciplinary design-build competition hosted biennially by the
U.S. Department of Energy for three weeks in October. WAC Lighting, a
leading manufacturer and designer of track, recessed, undercabinet,
monorail and decorative lighting, develops nearly all of its
responsible products in the family owned, ISO 9001-certified
manufacturing campus with in-house UL approved testing labs.
According to WAC Lighting President Shelley Wang, "The Solar Energy Decathlon brings attention to one of the biggest challenges we face-an ever-increasing need for energy. As an internationally recognized event, the Solar Energy Decathlon features energy efficient solutions from renewable sources.
"This sponsorship is another example of our commitment to 'Responsible Lighting,'" explained Ms. Wang. "In addition to developing new LED and OLED technology, we are also exploring Solar Lighting Products."
WAC Lighting is sponsoring the 2009 Cornell Solar Decathlon team, which includes more than 150 students from undergraduate and graduate colleges across campus, with support from Cornell faculty members, staff and alumni. Student members are attending five of Cornell's colleges including: the Colleges of Engineering, Architecture, Human Ecology, and Agricultural and Life Sciences, as well as the Johnson Graduate School of Management. This sponsorship opportunity was made possible with the support of Friedman Electric, a leading lighting and electrical distributor in Ithaca, New York.
Twenty college and university teams will compete to design, build and operate the most attractive, effective and energy-efficient solar-powered house. Just like the well-known Olympic event, the Solar Decathlon consists of 10 contests that center on the ways in which we use energy in our daily lives, including: Architecture; Market Viability; Engineering; Lighting Design; Communications; Comfort Zone; Hot Water; Appliances; Home Entertainment; and Net Metering. The final judging of the competition is planned for October 9-13 and 15-18, 2009, on the National Mall in Washington, DC .
About Cornell University Decathlon House
The 2009 Cornell University Solar Decathlon House combines sustainable modular design with a unique assembly of geometric elements. The solar house integrates bold aesthetic features with creative sustainable applications, including lighting and solar thermal controls that minimize climate control needs while maintaining a pleasing and healthy productive human environment. Locally produced, environmentally friendly materials and woods cover an interior that contains far more than any normal house of its size should. The outside of the house seamlessly complements the interiors' open aesthetic, using sliding and collapsible glass walls to blur the distinction between interior and exterior.
