Seoul Mayor Visits NYC's High Line
6.30.09 | New York, NY | The mayor of Seoul, Korea, along with a delegation from the Seoul Metropolitan Government, was led by NY Projects, Inc., today on a guided tour of New York City’s recently opened High Line elevated park. The group was joined by Alexandros Washburn, Chief Urban Designer of New York City’s Department of City Planning, who provided background on the recently opened park.
According to Yung Hee Kim, president of the Manhattan-based art and design advisory company NY Projects, Mayor Se-Hoon Oh and the Seoul delegation have been visiting New York City to receive a United Nations award after successfully hosting the C40 Large Cities Climate Summit in Seoul in May 2009.
Seoul has been named World Design Capital 2010 and currently has major architecture and infrastructure projects underway. Mayor Oh is in the
process of transforming his city into an international design center, and the High Line is considered a significant reference for Seoul's redevelopment plan.
The High Line, a 1.5-mile-long public park built on a defunct elevated rail line running along Manhattan’s lower west side, opened June 8 this year.
Se-Hoon Oh, mayor of South Korea’s capital city since 2006, toured the High Line in the morning to see firsthand the impact of the elevated park on its neighborhood, and also to learn how the city government and local design leaders, including the group Friends of the High Line, have played significant roles in developing the new urban amenity.
Mayor Oh visited the historic High Line while in New York for the 2009 United Nations Public Service Awards, where he accepted commendation as the Asia-Pacific winner for “improving transparency, accountability and
responsiveness in the public service.” Mayor Oh received the U.N. Public Service Awards for the city’s two major policies: the Seoul Water Now System and Seoul City's Oasis, which seeks public input for
municipal policy. The mayor introduced the idea of “Creative Governance” as his main goal when he took office in July 2006.
The tour of the High Line today was facilitated by NY Projects, Inc., with Alexandros Washburn on hand to discuss the role the city has played in the novel and successful park. The mayor and the Seoul delegation began the walk-through at about 10:00am EDT near Gansevoort St. in the Meatpacking District, with a group of reporters as well as several planners and designers involved with the High Line project.
