Humanscale Moves Toward Paperless Literature

5.29.09 | New York, NY | In an effort to significantly reduce the environmental impact of its printed literature, Humanscale has adopted an electronic marketing initiative that will reduce the number of brochures it prints by 90% and save more than 1,300 trees each year.

In 2008, Humanscale printed more than 10 million pages of literature for use in North America alone. In addition to their impact on forests, these brochures and sell sheets were responsible for large amounts of carbon released into the atmosphere from paper production and printing, and significant levels of fuel consumption associated with transporting both the bulk paper and printed brochures.

“When we looked at the real environmental impact of our printed literature program, it was clear that we needed to change course and focus our future efforts on digital marketing, which we believe is the future of marketing in our industry,” says Tom Revelle, Humanscale’s Vice President of Marketing.

The benefits of digital literature, in addition to virtually zero environmental impact, are many.

“While we initiated this program for its environmental advantages, we expect to see many other benefits as well,” adds Revelle. These benefits include no longer dealing with out-of-date materials, less management of literature inventory at dealerships and A&D firms, much quicker turnaround to get new or updated materials into the field, and, of course, cost savings.

The few pieces of literature that Humanscale will continue to print will be Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified to ensure the use of eco-conscious paper, printing products and processes. While the contract furniture industry as a whole has been reluctant to go paperless, the ever-increasing reliance on computers has made the transition to electronic materials both logical and beneficial.

About Humanscale

Humanscale is the premier designer and manufacturer of ergonomic tools for a more comfortable workplace. Our innovative seating, monitor arms, lighting, keyboard supports, and other ergonomic solutions are designed to improve the health, efficiency and quality of work life.

Humanscale products are based on the belief that when design solves a functional problem as simply and elegantly as possible, the resulting form will be honest and timeless. This philosophy has served us well: Humanscale was the only contract furniture manufacturer named among I.D. Magazine's top ten “enterprises that help push design forward” along with other design-driven companies including Nike and BMW. And our Liberty chair was the only task seating solution featured in the 2007 National Design Triennial at the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum. Liberty joined the Apple iPod and Boeing's 787 Dreamliner jet, among others, as one of the most important design innovations in America.

Environmental Statement

Humanscale is committed to environmental sustainability and continually strives to design, engineer and manufacture products that:

• Weigh less, requiring less raw material
• Use fewer parts and manufacturing processes
• Contain a high percentage of recycled content
